Air travel is often characterised by moments of uncertainty, anticipation, and stress. Security controls, waiting times, route decisions, and changing information can place significant cognitive demands on passengers, particularly during the most critical phases of the journey. This project explored how design can contribute to making these experiences more intuitive, comfortable, and emotionally manageable.

Developed in collaboration with Gnosis Arch, the study focused on key areas of Milan Linate Airport, with particular attention to passenger flows, security screening procedures, and transition spaces. Through the lens of neuroscience and environmental psychology, Tuning Arch analysed how travellers perceive, interpret, and navigate the airport environment, identifying opportunities to improve both orientation and emotional comfort.

The research examined the sequence of experiences encountered by passengers, recognising that airport journeys are shaped not only by operational efficiency but also by perceptions of control, predictability, and environmental clarity. Particular attention was devoted to decision points, waiting conditions, visibility, and the emotional impact of security procedures. The project investigated how environmental cues can support intuitive navigation while reducing uncertainty and cognitive effort.

The resulting recommendations contributed to the development of a more human-centred passenger experience. The project demonstrates how transportation infrastructure can benefit from a deeper understanding of behaviour, transforming necessary procedures into experiences that are easier to navigate, less stressful, and more supportive of individual wellbeing.
