Workplaces are increasingly required to accommodate changing organisational structures, hybrid working patterns, and evolving expectations about wellbeing and collaboration. In this context, the transformation of existing office buildings presents an opportunity not only to improve performance but also to rethink the relationship between people and their working environment.

This project focused on the redevelopment of an office building located within Rome’s EUR district. Rather than beginning from technical requirements alone, the study investigated how future users perceive workplace environments and how these perceptions influence behaviour, engagement, and organisational culture.

The research explored the relationship between concentration, collaboration, environmental comfort, and workplace identity. Particular attention was devoted to understanding how different spatial settings support different modes of work, recognising that contemporary organisations require a greater diversity of environments than traditional office models typically provide. Environmental legibility, opportunities for restoration, and informal social interaction were considered fundamental components of workplace quality.

The resulting framework translated insights from neuroscience and environmental psychology into strategic recommendations capable of guiding the transformation process. The project demonstrates how workplace regeneration can become an opportunity to create more adaptive, engaging, and human-centred environments aligned with the needs of contemporary organisations.
